Scissor Lifts vs Boom Lifts: Which One is Right for Your Job?

When you’re working at heights, you need to have the EWP gear that’s matched to your job. Different jobs require different elevated work platforms – but one thing remains the same – whether you’re on a construction site, repairing signage, or trimming tall trees, elevating workers safely and securely is non-negotiable.

Today we want to look at a common question in the EWP world, and one we get asked a lot at Altequip: ‘Should I use a scissor lift or a boom lift’? Both are very useful pieces of machinery adapted to a variety of height jobs. But are they suitable for yours?

We’re going to help you decide by breaking down scissor lifts and boom lifts. Let’s take a look at what they are, their benefits and the jobs each platform is suited to.

What is a Scissor Lift?

A scissor lift is a vertical access platform that moves straight up and down using a folding support structure that resembles a pair of scissors when the platform is elevated. You can see where the name comes from! Most people are familiar with this common kind of EWP so you’re likely to recognise one when you see one.

They’re commonly used indoors or on firm, flat surfaces where only straight-up access is required. Painters and electricians use scissor lifts extensively on their projects, as do the warehouse and maintenance sectors.

Advantages of a Scissor Lift

1. Simplicity and safety
Scissor lifts are relatively easy to operate and offer a sturdy, enclosed platform that enhances worker safety. They only move up and down, which makes them perfect for straightforward jobs at height. The whole machine is very stable too.

2. Bigger work platforms
If you need room for tools, materials, and a couple of team members at height then a scissor lift could be the answer. They usually have larger platforms than boom lifts so are ideal for jobs where multiple people need to work side-by-side.

3. Cost-effective
Scissor lifts are generally entry-level when it comes to EWP pricing. This applies to hiring one or purchasing one. This makes them a solid entry point for budget-conscious projects. You get a lot of functionality for your investment!

What is a Boom Lift?

Boom lifts are also known as cherry pickers or knuckle booms. They have an extendable ‘boom’ arm that allows them to reach out as well as up, making them the EWP of choice for workers accessing hard-to-reach areas. The boom can go over and around any obstacles in its path..

There are two main types: telescopic booms and articulating booms. Telescopic booms are more basic in their setup, featuring a single hinge that allows the arm to extend out and up in a straight line. Articulating booms move a bit more freely, with the ability to bend at multiple points for better maneuverability.

Advantages of a Boom Lift

1. Extended reach
Boom lifts offer both vertical and horizontal reach. They’re the go-to for jobs like building maintenance, electrical line repairs, accessing hard-to-reach signage and tree lopping.

2. Flexibility on tough terrain
With the right boom lift, you can tackle rough terrain like bumpy or uneven surfaces. They’re popular on outdoor jobs for this reason, as well as the fact they have the furthest reach of all EWPs. This is a very adaptable piece of machinery.

3. Precision positioning
Boom lifts’ excellent maneuverability allows for access to tight spaces other EWPs wouldn’t reach. Thanks to the articulated movement of the boom arm precise positioning of the platform is possible too.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Scissor Lift or Boom Lift

You know what job you need to get done, you’re just not sure which lift to go for. Here’sare the key concepts to think about when deciding on the right elevated work platform:

Direction

If you only need to go up or down, then stick with a scissor lift. It’s a stable option that’s easy to use, and it means you aren’t overcomplicating the job. However, if you need to reach over or around something, then a scissor lift won’t cut it and you’ll need to go the boom lift route. Let’s say there’s a fence or ditch between the worksite and the base of the machine – go boom lift. Painting cornices directly above you on a six-metre-high roof? A scissor lift will do the trick.

Height

The height that both types of EWP can reach varies by make and model, but boom lifts will always have the greatest reach. Scissor lifts usually max out somewhere between 12 and 18 metres, whereas some boom lifts soar over 40-metres high. The height of your job will definitely be a major consideration. If you’re looking at multi-storey maintenance or high signage, you’ll need the superior height of the boom lift.

Capacity

That cantilever design of the boom lift arm may give it extra versatility and ability, but it simply can’t support as much weight as the straight up and down scissor lift. Scissor lifts will normally have a bigger platform too, so if you have a multi-person job requiring a bunch of tools, the space and payload capacity of a scissor lift should tick your boxes.

Budget

Boom lifts are more complex machines that expand to higher levels. That versatility is reflected in their price because they are more expensive to hire or purchase. Scissor lifts come out ahead on affordability, but their limited range of motion may not make them suitable for all jobs. It’s a case of balancing out your needs with how much you’re willing to spend.

Location

Location is going to be a big factor in choosing between a scissor lift or boom lift. Scissor lifts are best on flat and smooth surfaces like warehouse floors, shopping centres, and indoor construction works. Boom lifts can handle complex environments such as uneven ground or obstructions much better. Generally speaking, scissor lifts work well indoors, and boom lifts outdoors. It does depend on the specifics of the job at hand though!
